Carrie Blast Furnaces

Another NXNW Adventure

Carrie Blast Furnaces

I’m fresh back from another trip with the NXNW crew. The destination this year was Pittsburgh, PA. Although it was our first trip to a major metropolis, our itinerary included more than just pretty skylines. One of the highlights was the Carrie Blast Furnaces in Homestead, PA. We took a tour hosted by Rivers of Steel, an organization that, according to their site, “…showcases the artistry and innovation of southwestern Pennsylvania’s industrial and cultural heritage by fostering dynamic initiatives and transformative experiences.” Carrie definitely fit the industrial bill.

Since the decline of the areas steel industry in the1970s and 1980s, these are the only non-operative blast furnaces in the region that remain.

The facility is currently undergoing a historic preservation, which restricted our access to the exterior. That proved to be enough to fill our time.

The day was gloomy and gray with threatening rain, which thankfully held off. They were the perfect conditions for highlight this incredible location.

I have a few images from Carrie to share, starting with this one.
