On the Rock Island Line

000  Glenrio, Texas

Abandoned Gas Station and Cafe• Glenrio, TX • Day Four

The first stop on Day Four was the ghost town, Glenrio, Texas. Or maybe it was New Mexico since it straddles the border. Fine. Both.

The town was founded as Rock Island was originally a railroad town on the Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. For whatever reason, the town was renamed Glenrio by the railroad, or so Wikipedia tells me.   Like many Route 66 communities, Glenrio’s decline started with the completion of Route 40.

Our visit was a short but rewarding one. Our early arrival ensured the sun was low, thus giving is great light. We photographed the abandoned cafe and gas station from a few angles and hit the road.

000  About This Series

From April 12 through April 20, 2025, I was on a Route 66 Photography Adventure (The Trip) with three good friends and like minded photographers. This series is recap of The Trip in stories and images.

All of the images were shot on that historic road or within a couple of miles of it. Neither the images nor stories are necessarily presented in chronological order.
