Hole in the wall Conoco Station

Hole in the Wall • Commerce, OK • Day Five
Now called Allen’s Fillin’ Station, Hole in the Wall Conoco Station, is located on Commerce, Oklahoma on Route 66. Built in 1929/1930, it looks like a toy, but is very much real. It has an interesting history if only for the fact that it is located about a half mile from a landmark where Bonnie and Clyde and their gang shot and killed a local constable, Cal Campbell. Locals speculate that the infamous duo stopped at Hole in the Wall for gas.
The gas station sat empty for an estimated twenty years before it was purchased in or around 2013 by Linda and Bobby Allen, who restored it as a museum and gift shop.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, early in the Route 66 trip I started looking for compositions that would fit a wide aspect ratio of 2x1, and Hole in the Wall certainly fit the bill. The long brick wall that the station was built from provided the perfect framing element to illustrate Hole in the Wall’s scale. The whitewashed section along the bottom helped the vivid colors pop.
000 About This Series
From April 12 through April 20, 2025, I was on a Route 66 Photography Adventure (The Trip) with three good friends and like minded photographers. This series is recap of The Trip in stories and images.
All of the images were shot on that historic road or within a couple of miles of it. Neither the images nor stories are necessarily presented in chronological order.
